Jaz Parks is on the hunt for a politically-powerful vampire; but little does she know that she herself is being hunted - by her future boss, Vayl. In this exciting short story that takes place prior to Once Bitten, Twice Shy, Vayl sees Jaz in action for the very first time.

Let me start off by saying that I LOVE the Jaz Parks series. If you haven't yet read any of the titles in the series, it is an urban fantasy series featuring Jaz, a CIA assassin and her vampire partner Vayl. Vayl is a dapper, urbane, sophisticate who also happens to be a vampire. Jaz, his partner is definitely damaged goods as the sole survivor of a team of vampire hunters she previously led. Since this is not really a review of the series, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to go any deeper into the plot of the series simply because this is NOT a stand alone story.

Just so everyone is clear, this is definitely a SHORT story, emphasis on the short, just in case you didn't pick up on that from the capital letters. :-) One of the more infuriating things about a kindle is that you get code instead of page numbers but I would guess that you are looking at maybe 25 pages here if you are lucky...just enough to whet your appetite for more. As another reviewer pointed out, if you don't love the series and hunger for everything Jaz and Vayl, you will probably walk away angry or feeling cheated as she did.

The story could definitely be considered a prequel to the first book, Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Jaz Parks). To be even more accurate it really just adds a bit to the prologue which starts off the first book. In that prologue we are introduced to Jaz when she is in with her boss Pete and she learns that, rather than being fired, he has decided to partner her up with Vayl whom she had never met, only heard rumors about. Jaz has worked solo for six months, ever since she lost her team, and with each assignment she has become more and more reckless. At first Jaz thinks Pete is assigning her a babysitter but she is assured that is not the case. She's told that Vayl requested her but when she presses is told that Vayl has his reasons, reasons which he will reveal to her in time. It's time. We are treated to a glimpse of the very beginning of the team that will become Jaz's second family. I really can't say very much without spoiling the story because there really isn't much story. In Scouting Jasmine we get to go along with Vayl when he gets his first look at Jaz in action and we learn a little bit about the growing attraction he has had for her throughout the series.

In looking at Jennifer Rardin's page, you'll see that Orbit is releasing one of five short stories per month starting with this one in April. I had contacted Jennifer when the fifth book in the series One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5), was first released because I heard a rumor that she was going to end the series with the sixth book. I was happily surprised when she contacted me and assured me that she had several more books inside her about Jaz and Vayl which needed to be told. I don't know if the short stories which are forthcoming were actually intended as short stories or were they simply story outlines for the books she planned to write for the series. I strongly suspect it is the latter but since Jennifer passed away it is all we are going to get. So if you love the series nearly as much as I and have chomped anxiously at the bit every year waiting for the book to hit the shelves in October this is it. On the bright side, not that there is a bright side to this situation since the author took her own life, but Orbit has moved up the publication date of the final book, The Deadliest Bite (Jaz Parks), to June 2nd and has parceled out these short stories. Maybe if we are lucky, sometime next year they will all be gathered up into a collection and be available in the dead tree version but for now they are available for our kindle.

This is definitely one of my favorite urban fantasy series and if you love plenty of action with a seriously sarcastic butt kicking protagonist, as opposed to one who always tells you how much butt she kicks while always needing to be rescued, then this series is for you. As an added plus for those of us who like reading about vampires and everything supernatural but so don't want to be dragged kicking and screaming into the bedroom to watch people have sex every few pages, no graphic or gratuitous sex included! That isn't to say that Jaz doesn't let you know that she definitely enjoys the view when Vayl is in it but trust me, after some of the things I have read, this is definitely G rated, okay maybe PG. I have recommended this series for years to people asking for a good read in the genre so I urge everyone to check it out while at the same time knowing that not every book is for every person...thank goodness there are so many on the shelves to choose from. If you are interested, they are in order:
Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Jaz Parks)
Another One Bites the Dust (Jaz Parks Series #2)
Biting the Bullet (Jaz Parks, Book 3)
Bitten to Death (Jaz Parks, Book 4),
One More Bite (Jaz Parks, Book 5),
Bite Marks (Jaz Parks, Book 6)
Bitten in Two (Jaz Parks, Book 7)
The Deadliest Bite (Jaz Parks)

Scouting Jasmine eBook Jennifer Rardin Reviews

This was the best of the 3 shorts. It added an element to the back story that was not there before.
Love the Jaz Parks books and liked being able to read a short story from Vayl's point of view. Wish there were more books!
I really enjoyed all the jaz parks books. She's a kick a.. ginger. I wish there was a few more but all good things must come to an end.
I love her writing and this series. Of course the short stories are just as good. Must read if you haven't already. Even if you have.
Loved it. It was great getting something from Vayle's (Yeah, pretty sure i'm spelling his name wrong but you know who I mean!) POV. Big Jaz Parks fan so this was a real treat.
Good start I wish I've seen this small novella before I started reading the trilogy of Jaz Parks. It kick the relationship off between Vayl and Jaz which makes the first novel more understandable. Showing the respect Vayl for Jaz develops before they met.
I enjoyed reading the first book in the Jaz Parks series and heard about the death of the series' creator Jennifer Rardin. I had most of the rest of the series in my TBR pile and was excited to hear of several short stories being offered on for $1.99. Some of these shorts are about Jaz and some of them aren't. Either way I preordered several of them. I started right in on "Scouting Jasmine" as it is a prequel to the first full novel. The plot is just as the title suggests. It tells of Vayl (who becomes her vampire partner in the first book) 'scouting' Jaz based on the things he has heard about her. He wants to see for himself what this woman can do.

This is a cute, but unnecesary short story that really doesn't have an impact on the series at all. The story is also over before it begins. It is extremely short and ends abruptly. I'm glad to pay something for the story but $1.99 is too much; it would be better as a .99 offering and would probably make readers more prone to enjoying it more at that price. I would want potential readers to know that this story isn't at all bad, but really and truly you aren't missing a thing if you take a pass on this one.
