Zanoni edition by Edward Bulwer Lytton Baron Lytton Literature Fiction eBooks

Thrilling read. Timeless topics. A classic of the occult. Be patient at the beginning as it slowly builds up and the language maybe archaic at times - it was written in 1842. Many thoughts for the spiritual seeker even as it is set in the years leading up to the French Revolution. This is one of the first if not the first book that introduces the concept of the Dweller on the Threshold - an artificial self we have created, our synthetic ego.

I deeply felt the conflict that the author brings out, of a great Adept - Zanoni - who has lived for many centuries, choosing to stay a passive observer of the follies of man, one who has seen the rise and fall of empires and men. Yet, in his elevated wisdom and knowledge he feels himself alone, and the stars will it that he falls in love with a beautiful Italian prima donna opera singer. Their love flourishes, through it Zanoni makes himself vulnerable to its vicissitudes, something that makes him human again.

Zanoni is a great read, other books in this tradition that I have read are Brother of the Third Degree,The Red Lion: The Elixir of Eternal Life,The Da Vinci Code,Quest for the Lost Name: A Transformational Thriller of Metaphysical and Visionary Fantasy, Soulmate Romance, Esoteric Initiation, and New Age Spirituality (Metaphysical Fiction Series Book 1)

Zanoni edition by Edward Bulwer Lytton Baron Lytton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Zanoni was an awesomely crafted story that I think I read (420 pages) in record time. The characters were well crafted and each reflected the individual states of Being found common in almost all human beings. Our faults and our Graces. The setting was around the time of the French Revolution and the main Characters, Zanoni the Rosicrucian mystic, still emotionally connected to his humanity, his teacher, the Transcendent Mejnour, Love interest, Viola, and the Englishman Glyndon, the young adventurer. Along with the other well developed players in this mystical drama of love, war, and enlightenment,I found myself totally immersed and invested in the story that was not so much about the revolution, as that backdrop was brought into the story as it progressed, as it was about these 4 lives, intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and socially. I specifically appreciated the parts of the story where the narration indicated a partial loss of wording in the manuscript. I thought where and how it was done made it appear that what I was reading was not fiction but the account of a factual event. As someone drawn to mystical thought I began to read this as a historical document. At any rate I highly recommend Zanoni. Like some of my other most enjoyed readings, it will be read more than once because each reading shows me something new.
The songbird to Coelho's hymn. Many play at wisdom; his Alchemist (Coelho's) is a beggar dressed in purple. Fine words are nothing more than flattery and vanity. Worthy words that are true can both mend and sting, unchanged. The lessons in this story are timeless, the hero and the villain unmistakable, each having their mannerisms distinct to their natures, the lives they have chosen. This book is more profitable to the young than any other epic or drama I can think of. The awful realities of life, and its small consolidations, grow ever more relatable as the heavenly treasures hinted at become more whole, being seen more clearly by the experiences life does teach us, leading, dragging, or promising.
Published in 1842 and set during the French Terror [1789] this is NOT a Tale of Two Cities. What Bulwer-Lytton has produced is a turgid gothic romance popular during the period. Lots and Lots of exposition and little by way of dialogue, so it will not be the sort of book that modern genre readers will, most likely, enjoy.

I'm not going to outline the plot here, visit its Wikipedia page if you wish to see this, but what I will do is tell you the basic plot is that of a romantic tragedy...prospective readers will, hopefully, draw their own conclusions from this.

Having said the above, Zanoni is still a good, but not great, book within its tradition.

3 out of 5 stars with a mild recommendation for those who like period, genre-based narratives.
